I don't consider a show to be truly great unless it has maintained its strengths for several seasons.  With that in mind I can see when a show is doing something different than would have been done in the past; sometimes it's better, sometimes it's a different perspective.

I think "great" has become an overused term to describe any show that has a fanbase these days.

Not everything can be great and sadly most things aren't.

For me, I can love and be a fan of a show, but I think what determines the greatness of a show (and this is just my personal decision process) is whether I would buy the show on DVD for repeated future rewatches.

Re-watch factor is definitely a sign of greatness for me too; especially when I start a re-watch in a completely unplanned fashion due to a marathon popping up and sucking me into it. That just happened to me and I re-watched most of Breaking Bad over the holidays.
