I see the weakness in early episodes, just like you can see how awful the early TNG episodes were. But in defense of Babylon 5 the tv movie and the first season gives you the building blocks of the characters. As an uber fan I think you can go without watching most of the 5th season (excluding the last episode) but I think you need the 1st season as a building block. Plus it also shows how far the show progressed in a short time.
